General Information

Can I transfer my foster care license to another agency?

Yes. Foster parents in Ohio may transfer their license from one private agency to another. You do not need to close your license to move; you simply complete a transfer process.

Do I have to start over if I transfer?

No. Your existing training hours, background checks, and home study information move with you. Only updated documents required by the new agency must be completed.

The Transfer Process

How long does a transfer take?

Most transfers take 30–60 days depending on how quickly paperwork is completed and how responsive the current agency is.

What steps are involved?

The process typically includes: notifying your current agency, completing a transfer request, updating your home study, completing any missing documents, and final approval by the state.

Will my current agency be notified?

Yes. The state requires your current agency to be informed. They cannot block your transfer, but they may provide documentation needed for the process.

Children in Your Home

Can I transfer if I currently have children placed in my home?

Yes. Children may remain in your home during the transfer. The county or custodial agency will update placement paperwork once the transfer is complete.

Will transferring affect the children’s case?

No. The case remains with the county. Only your licensing agency changes.

Training & Requirements

Do I need new training hours?

Your completed training hours transfer with you. If the new agency has additional requirements, they will let you know.

Will I need a new home study?

Your existing home study is updated rather than recreated. Only changes in your household or environment need to be documented.

Financial & Support Questions

Does transferring change my reimbursement rate?

Possibly. Each private agency sets its own reimbursement structure. Your new agency will provide a rate sheet before you transfer.

Will I lose support during the transfer?

No. Your current agency continues supporting you until the transfer is officially completed.

Starting the Transfer

How do I begin?

Contact the agency you want to transfer to. They will guide you through the required forms and notify your current agency on your behalf.
